Pre sailing checklist
- Before you set sail you should complete the following checklist to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable sail.
- Check the weather forecast, by checking the internet, calling Marinecall on 0891 505200 or telephone the local coastguard.
- Check the condition of the boat and its equipment.
- Ensure the engine is well maintained. Carry a tool kit and essential spares just in case.
- Make sure there is sufficient safety equipment (life jackets and fire extinguishers) for all on board.
- Know the local conditions of where you plan to sail such as, tide and areas of shallow water.
- Obtain relevant charts and tide tables.
- Plan your trip: How long will it take? Who will keep watch? Etc.
- Leave details of your planned trip with someone ashore.
- Complete CG66 form, which is accessible to all coastguard co-ordination centres throughout the UK giving them information on your boat to help search for your boat if necessary.
- Ensure your vehicles and trailers are not obstructing slipways.
- Be aware of your own limitations and those of your crew and your boat.
